St. Josephine Bakhita Girls Preparatory School, Kitabi, is a Catholic-founded and Catholic-oriented institution established with a noble vision of nurturing young girls in faith, character, knowledge, and service. The school admits Catholic pupils and is guided in its mission by the religious sisters of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Counsel of Mbarara.
OUR BEGINNING
The establishment of St. Josephine Bakhita Girls Preparatory School was born out of a vision and dream of the Archbishop to provide an environment where young Catholic girls could receive quality education while being firmly grounded in the Catholic faith. His desire was to nurture girls who would grow into responsible Christian women, devoted to God, committed to their families, and ready to serve the Church and society…..1
St. Josephine Bakhita Girls Preparatory School, Kitabi, is therefore more than a place of academic learning. It is a centre of faith and human formation a place where a dream is lived out through the education and formation of young girls for a better future.
This vision was deeply rooted in the long-standing history and identity of Kitabi Parish. For many years, Kitabi Parish has been an important centre of culture, faith, human formation, and education. It has played a significant role in the formation of people and the development of human resources. Recognising the importance of education in shaping the future of the Church and society, the Archbishop envisioned a school that would build upon this rich heritage by providing young girls with a strong foundation for life.
The Archbishop’s dream was therefore not simply to establish another school, but to create a centre of formation where education would go hand in hand with Christian values. He envisioned a place where girls would be encouraged to discover and develop their God-given talents, cultivate discipline and responsibility, grow in wisdom and knowledge, and become women of strong faith and good character.
In pursuit of this vision, numerous consultations and meetings were held with different people who could contribute to the realisation of the dream. Among those consulted were priests, religious sisters, and lay people, particularly those with experience and expertise in education. Through these consultations, ideas were shared, possibilities were explored, and plans were developed. These efforts gradually transformed the Archbishop’s dream into a concrete educational project.
The initiative eventually became a reality with the establishment of St. Josephine Bakhita Girls Preparatory School, Kitabi, under the guidance and leadership of the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Counsel of Mbarara. The school was named after Saint Josephine Bakhita, the Sudanese-born saint who became a powerful witness of faith, forgiveness, human dignity, and trust in God. Her life and example provide a profound inspiration for the formation of young girls who are called to live with courage, faith, dignity, and love.
From its beginning, the school has sought to remain faithful to the original vision of its founder: to provide an education that forms the whole person. Academic excellence is therefore complemented by spiritual formation, moral development, discipline, service, and respect for others. The school strives to prepare girls not only for academic success, but also for meaningful Christian lives within their families, the Church, and society.
The story of St. Josephine Bakhita Girls Preparatory School, Kitabi, is therefore a story of vision, faith, consultation, and commitment. What began as the Archbishop’s dream of nurturing Catholic-grounded girls for the Church and families became a reality through the collective efforts of priests, religious sisters, lay people, educationists, and the wider Catholic community.
The school continues to draw inspiration from the rich heritage of Kitabi Parish, a place that has historically valued faith, culture, human formation, and education. Its mission is to carry this tradition forward by providing a nurturing environment in which young girls can grow intellectually, spiritually, morally, and socially.
As the school continues to develop, it remains committed to the dream that inspired its foundation: to nurture young Catholic girls who will become women of faith, wisdom, integrity, responsibility, and service. In this way, St. Josephine Bakhita Girls Preparatory School, Kitabi, continues to be an expression of the Church’s commitment to education and to the formation of future generations for the good of the family, the Church, and society.
